- 1954 - Earthquake in northern Algeria and around 1,600 people die and 5,000 people are injured.[10]

- 1965 – Hurricane Betsy makes landfall on Grand Isle, Louisiana, just west of the mouth of Mississippi River. The storm travels to the river, and causes that Mississippi River in New Orleans rises by 10 meters and causes significant flooding, leaving 76 people dead. Hurricane Betsy is the first $1 billion storm (without adjusting for inflation) (that was about $15 billion in 2008).[9]
- 1971 - During the prisoners' riot at the Attica prison in New York, 39 prison guards and staff are taken hostage. They protest against overcrowding. The siege lasts until September 13 when authorities retake the prison but with dire consequences, including the death of ten hostages and 29 other deaths, plus nearly 100 others with serious injuries.[9]
