Historical events this day: (from Wikipedia)
- 411 BC - Democracy in Athens is being overthrown by the oligarchic extremists Antiphon, Theramenes, the crushing defeat of the Sicilian expedition and the subsequent revolts among the city's allies have severely weakened Athenian finances; the purpose of this revolutionary movement is to revise the constitution, so that Athens' economy would be better managed. However, the board will be short-lived and the "Council of the Four Hundred" will only remain in power for four months.
- 68 - The day after the Roman Senate has declared emperor Nero be persona non grata and appointed Galba to his successor, Nero chooses to commit suicide. He has been emperor since 54, but his rule has been noted for being particularly tyrannical (according to an unconfirmed legend, among other things, he is said to have merrily played the zither while Rome burns in 64) and earlier in the year a rebellion against him had broken out. He has become more and more crowded and to avoid being murdered he chooses suicide. Vespasian's rise to power ends with him.
- 1534 - The French explorer Jacques Cartier becomes the first European to aim Saint Lawrence River in present-day Canada. He also claims the area around the river too of the French king Bill. This will be the basis for the French possessions in North America, which will remain in French hands for over 200 years (until 1763).
- 1804 – Ludwig van Beethoven's third symphony "Eroica” i E flat major, opus 55, is performed for the first time at a private event.
- 1815 – Congress of Vienna, which has been running since September of the previous year, ends. The purpose of the congress is to "restore the old order" and arrange the European map according to it French Revolution and The Napoleonic Wars, which has lasted for the past 20 years. It also aims to create a balance of power between the European great powers, so that none of them becomes too powerful at the expense of another (especially that the power of France after Emperor Napoleon I:'s fall should not be too great) and that the old princely houses, which have been set aside during Napoleon's time, should be reinstated. The final act of Congress forms the framework for the European map and Great Power politics for the next century and creates relative calm between the Great Powers until the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
- 1934 - The cartoon Silly Symphonies- the short film The wise hen (English: The Wise Little Hen), made by the animator Walt Disney's studio, premieres in American cinemas and the character appears in the film Donald Duck (English: Donald Duck) for the first time (although he is mentioned in a storybook from 1932). Together with Mickey Mouse and Goofy Donald Duck later becomes one of Disney's most famous figures and these three are still today (2022) something of a hallmark for the film company.
- 1946 - The Thai King Ananda Mahidol dies (probably murdered) aged 20. He is succeeded on the throne by his younger brother Bhumibol Adulyadej who sits on the throne until his death on October 13 2016. With 70 years on the throne, he is the world's longest-reigning monarch.
- 1954 – The Hökmark meteorite impact, one of the few witnessed meteorite impact in Sweden
- 1969 - Spain closes its border gates and cuts off all lines of communication to the British colony Gibraltar,[3] which is located on the Spanish south coast and has belonged to Great Britain since 1704. The closure comes two years after a referendum in Gibraltar showed strong support for the area to remain British and just over a week after the British introduced "The Gibraltar Constitution Order" ( a sort of own constitution for the colony) on 30 May. By closing the border gates, Spain tries to put pressure on the British to return the colony to Spain. However, this fails and in 1982 the Spanish open the border gates partially and in 1985 completely, as a condition for Spain to become a member of European Economic Community 1986.
- 2007 - After completing a trip to China for 20 months in of the old East Indiamen wake returns the Swedish East Indiaman Gothenburg to Sweden, when it reaches Gothenburg. The ship is a newly built copy of an old ship with the same name, which was wrecked in Gothenburg's harbor entrance in 1745 and the voyage has received a lot of attention in both Sweden and China. On its return, the ship is even received by the Swedish king Carl XVI Gustaf and the President of China Hu Jintao, who, for the sake of the ship, has chosen to postpone a state visit to Sweden during his trip to Europe.
