• 217 - The Roman Emperor Caracalla gets murdered by the praetorian guard officer Julius Martialis. According to some sources, he commits the deed because his brother has been innocently executed a few days earlier and he has seen his own name on one of the emperor's death lists, while others claim that he is unhappy at not having been promoted to centurion. After the deed, he flees on horseback, but is immediately shot down and in turn killed by an archer from the guard. Caracalla was succeeded three days later by the praetorian prefect Macrinus, as per Herodianus is probably the one who ordered the murder.
• 1271 - The Mamluk Sultan Baibar's forces ingest of the Johannite Order crusader mount Krak des Chevaliers in present-day southwestern Syria, after besieging the fortress for 36 days. The Mamluks have previously managed to get a message from the Order's Grand Master into the castle, giving the crew permission to surrender (later, however, it turns out to be a forgery). With this, the Mamluks take over the initiative i Holy land and even if the Christian Crusaders remain in the area for another 20 years, this spells the end for the Christians the crusades, which has been going on and off since the end of the 11th century.
• 1378 - Then Gregory XI has died on March 27, Bartolomeo Prignano is elected Pope and takes the name Urban VI. Thus begins the great schism, which will last until 1417 and during which the struggle for the papacy occasionally leads to the simultaneous existence of three popes – in Avignon, Rome and Pisa.
• 1455 - Then Nicholas V has died on March 24, Alfonso de Borja is elected Pope and takes the name Calixtus III.
• 1838 - The British engineer and industrial magnate Isambard Kingdom Brunel's wheel steamer SSGreat Western leaves Bristol, UK and embarks on her maiden voyage to New York. As a fire had broken out in the engine room just over a week earlier, over 50 passengers canceled their tickets, so during the crossing, which takes fifteen days (she arrives in the US on April 23), there are only seven passengers on board. With this, the first transatlantic steamship route was inaugurated, then Great Western will be the first steamship to be put into regular traffic across the Atlantic.
• 1904 - France and the UK sign the defense alliance agreement "the hearty consensus” (French: "Entente cordiale"), by which the two countries form a defense alliance against Germany and resolve various disputes regarding their colonies in Africa. It is primarily France, which has an interest in acquiring allies against Germany, as the tension between these two countries since Franco-German War (1870–1871) is increasingly increasing. However, there is also interest from Great Britain, as the British want to prevent the Germans from building up a large fleet, which could threaten the British. • 1994 – The grunge band Nirvana's 27-year-old singer Kurt Cobain is found dead in his house in Seattle and the autopsy shows that he died three days earlier. He died of gunshot wounds from the rifle found next to him and is widely believed to have committed suicide, although some conspiracy theories claim he was murdered.
