  • 217 - The Roman Emperor Caracalla gets murdered by the praetorian guard officer Julius Martialis. According to some sources, he commits the deed because his brother has been innocently executed a few days earlier and he has seen his own name on one of the emperor's death lists, while others claim that he is unhappy at not having been promoted to centurion. After the deed, he flees on horseback, but is immediately shot down and in turn killed by an archer from the guard. Caracalla was succeeded three days later by the praetorian prefect Macrinus, as per Herodianus is probably the one who ordered the murder.
  • 1271 - The Mamluk Sultan Baibar's forces ingest of the Johannite Order crusader mount Krak des Chevaliers in present-day southwestern Syria, after besieging the fortress for 36 days. The Mamluks have previously managed to get a message from the Order's Grand Master into the castle, giving the crew permission to surrender (later, however, it turns out to be a forgery). With this, the Mamluks take over the initiative i Holy land and even if the Christian Crusaders remain in the area for another 20 years, this spells the end for the Christians the crusades, which has been going on and off since the end of the 11th century.

  • 1838 - The British engineer and industrial magnate Isambard Kingdom Brunel's wheel steamer SSGreat Western leaves Bristol, UK and embarks on her maiden voyage to New York. As a fire had broken out in the engine room just over a week earlier, over 50 passengers canceled their tickets, so during the crossing, which takes fifteen days (she arrives in the US on April 23), there are only seven passengers on board.
