  • 1141 - Then the English king Stephen of Blois' troops have been defeated by his cousin Matilda's army in the battle of Lincoln on February 2, she is proclaimed on this day as reigning queen of England in opposition to Stephen. However, she is not recognized throughout the kingdom and already on November 1 she is forced to renounce the throne.
  • 1384 - In a document by King Albrecht of Mecklenburg the Ostrogothic city Norrköping's city privilege is mentioned for the first time in preserved sources. The researchers believe that Norrköping may have received city privilege as early as the beginning of the 14th century, but since this is the oldest surviving evidence of it, this date is counted as the city's founding date.

  • 1906
    • The Swedish Riksdag adopts a spelling reform, which means that the old spelling be removed from Sweden's schools and authorities and that The Swedish Academy's dictionary of the Swedish language shall form the basis for the spelling of the Swedish language. Thus abolished f, fv and hv as spellings of the v sound and replaced by only v (so that for example whale should be spelled vault), and date replaced by t or tt for the t sound (so that for example red should be spelled RED). Plural endings on verbs (for example we went or they stood) is not abolished, however, until the Second World War in the 1940s.
    • The Italian Volcano Vesuvius erupts, which devastates large parts of the city of Naples and claims over 100 lives. During this eruption, Vesuvius spews more lava than during any other of its known eruptions.
  • 1939 - Italian troops begin an invasion of Albania, which the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini partly inspired by the German annexation of Austria and the invasion of the Czech Republic in March of the same year. On April 12, the invasion is complete and the Albanian king Zog I has been forced into exile. Albania becomes part of Greater Italy as a kingdom in personal union with the Italian, until 1943, when Albania is invaded by Germany.
  • 1945 - The Japanese implement Operation Ten-Go, the last major Japanese naval operation during the war in the pacific during World War II. The battleship Yamato, then the world's largest, and nine other Japanese ships begin a suicide attack on the American forces during the ongoing the battle of Okinawa, but they are discovered before they have arrived and Yamato and five of the other ships are sunk by the Americans.
  • 1948 - The United Nations establishes World Health Organization (World Health Organization; WHO), which must work to ensure that the world's population is in as good health as possible. The organization soon becomes an important player in the fight against diseases, through the distribution of vaccines and medicines and also in finally trying to overcome major world diseases, such as AIDS, malaria and smallpox.
  • 1953 - Then the Norwegian Trygve Lie has resigned from the post as Secretary-General of the United Nations on November 10 of the previous year, the Swedish diplomat is elected Dag Hammarskjold this day to his successor in the post, since on March 31 he has been proposed in the Security Council by 10 votes out of 11. Hammarskjöld will hold the post until 1961, when he dies in a plane crash.
  • 1971 - The two Croats Miro Barešić and collapses and its states become independent.
  • 1990 – The passenger ship M/SScandinavian Star, which is on its way from the Norwegian capital Oslo to Fredrikshamn in Denmark catches fire outside the Swedish Lysekil and the fire is probably arson. 158 people out of the 482 on board perish, of which 26 are children under the age of 15 and 3 are Swedes. After the accident, the ship is renovated and continues to serve until 2004, when it is scrapped. The police investigation is eventually closed, and it is never determined how the fires started or who was to blame.
  • 2003 - During the ongoing The Iraq War British forces capture the city Basra, while the Americans occupy the airport of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. When all of Baghdad falls in invasion force happens two days later also falls Saddam Hussein's regime and thus the invasion of Iraq is effectively over (although it is officially declared over only on May 1).
  • 2017
    • The terrorist act in Stockholm 2017 is at Drottninggatan in central Stockholm. A hijacked truck drives through a crowd at high speed and finally crashes into the entrance to Åhléns City. Three people die instantly. Two more people die in hospital, one the same day and one three weeks later. Fifteen are injured and nine of them are seriously injured.
    • USA carry out a Donald Trump. The attack is said to have knocked out large parts of the air base. At least seven Syrian soldiers are killed.
