  • 1854 - Japanese ships are ordered to use the flag Hinomaru, an all-white flag with a red circle in the center (symbolizing the rising sun) to distinguish them from foreign ships. In 1870 this is adopted as The official flag of Japan, while a variant with the red circle slightly to the left and with red rays from it later becomes the naval flag of Japan. In 1999, a slightly modified version of the Hinomaru is adopted through a new law on the flag and the national anthem.
  • 1903 - Then Leo XIII has passed away on July 20 is elected Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto to Pope and takes the name Pius X. Actually had Mariano Rampolla been tipped as the new pope, but under the conclave one of the cardinals vetoed this in the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Francis Joseph I's name, which was the last time a monarch sat in a papal election. Pius' pontificate lasts for 11 years, when in 1913 he suffers a heart attack and is worried by the development towards World War I the summer of 1914. He dies on 20 August 1914, three weeks after the outbreak of war.
  • 1914 - After Germany has declared war on France and marched into Belgium during yesterday has UK gave an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw from Belgium by August 4. As Germany does not comply before the ultimatum expires at midnight (eleven o'clock in the evening UK time), Britain therefore issues a declaration of war against Germany and thus joins World War I. The brand is supposed to be a car in the middle class, which will compete with the arch rivals Oldsmobile, Nash and Pontiac. Shortly thereafter, Chrysler also bought the brand Dodge and thus received two brands in the mid-price range, which was very successful for the company. The last Desoto model year was the 1961 model, which was presented in 1960 and all production of the brand ended on November 30 of that year.
  • 1944 - The Jewish girl Anne Frank and her family, as well as the Jewish family of van Pels and Fritz Pfeffer, are all arrested by the German secret police Gestapo. For two years they have been hiding in an attic in Amsterdam, away from the German persecution of Jews, but for some unknown reason the Gestapo has now found out about their hiding place and arrests them. They are all taken to various concentration camps in Germany and all but Anne's father Otto Frank later dies in the camps. After the war, Otto returns to the farmhouse and finds there Anne's diary, which she wrote during the two years between the Frank family going into hiding in 1942 and the arrest in 1944. This will partly be a documentation of the time they stay hidden, partly a fulfillment of Anne's dream of becoming a world-famous writer, as the diary is later published. It is unknown how the Gestapo found out about the hiding place.

  • 1984 - The West African one Republic of Upper Volta changes name to Burkina Faso. The name Upper Volta, which comes from the upper part of the Volta River flowing through the country, was introduced by the French colonial masters in 1895 and has remained even since the country gained independence from France in 1960. After Thomas Sankara has become president through a military coup the year before, he now wants to remove part of the colonial legacy, by, among other things, removing the old colonial name. Therefore, he changes the name of the country to Burkina Faso, which means "land of the holy people".
  • 1995 - As part of it Croatian War of Independence initiates the Croatian army Operation Storm, which lasts 84 hours (until August 7). The goal of the operation is to retake all Serb-occupied land i Croatia and west Bosnia and Herzegovina. This becomes the last military battle of the war and leads to Serbia signing on The Dayton Agreement, leading to a ceasefire, in December.
