  • 946 - When Edmund the Magnificent, who has been king of England since 939, is murdered in a fight with the outlaw Leofa, only 25 years old, he is succeeded the same day on the throne by his brother Edred. He is king for just under ten years, but dies himself at the age of 32 in 955.
  • 1831 - A Polish insurgent force of 34,000 men and 34 guns, led by General Jan Zygmunt Skrzynecki, is defeated by an equally strong Russian army of 35,000 men and 148 guns, under Field Marshal Hans Carl von Diebitsch-Zabalkanskis commander, i the battle of Ostrołęka. This will be the biggest clash during the ongoing Polish The November Uprising, which has erupted against the Russian regime the year before. By the fall of the same year, however, the Poles are defeated and Poland remains divided between Russia, Prussia/Germany and Austria until 1918.
  • 1879A strike breaks out at Curry Treffenberg has threatened the workers with prison if they did not return to work, the strike is called off after eight days, without the workers having achieved their goals. This is considered the first and most extensive Swedish industrial strike during the 19th century.
  • 1918Georgia declares its independence from the disintegrating Russia[3] in the surges after it Russian Revolution half a year earlier. However, the country suffers both internal and external problems and barely three years later (spring 1921) Georgia is invaded by the Soviet Red Army and becomes a Soviet republic until 1991, when it becomes independent again.
  • 1991 - A month and a half after Georgia declared its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union on April 9, Zviad Gamsachurdia, who pre-independence was chairman of the Supreme Council of the Georgian Soviet Republic and acting president since April 14, is being held in an overwhelming victory, as he gets 87.6 % of the votes. Barely eight months later, however, he is deposed by a military coup and is forced to live in exile until the fall of 1993, when he returns to try to regain power, but is killed on December 31 of the same year.
  • 2010Johan af Donner, who has previously been information and fundraising manager for The Cancer Foundation and communications director for Swedish Red Cross, is sentenced to five years in prison for gross embezzlement, as he has defrauded both organizations of at least SEK 6.6 million over nine years.   • 2011 - The Bosnian Serb general and war criminal Ratko Mladic is arrested by Serbian police in the village Lazarevo in northern Serbia. He has been on the run ever since of the Bosnian War end 1995 and stands at international war crimes tribunal in The Hague accused of having been responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war. He is handed over to the tribunal five days later and his trial begins a year later.
  • 2012 - The Swedish artist Loreen wins this year's edition of Eurovision Song Contest in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, when she performs the contribution "Euphoria". This will be Sweden's fifth victory in the competition all-time and the contribution's points total (372 points) is the second highest ever (after Norwegian Alexander Rybaks profit with "Fairy tale” i competition in 2009, who scored 387 points).
