  • 1521 - The German one Riksdag in Worms ends, after that under emperors Charles V's management has been ongoing since January 28. The Riksdag has dealt with several issues, but is best known for ending with the so-called the Treaty of Worms, in which the emperor issues a ban on aiding the reformer in any way Martin Luther and labels him a heretic. Furthermore, he must be captured as soon as possible. However, due to the popular support for Luther in Germany, the treaty will never come into force.
  • 1659 - After pressure from the English Parliament, the weak is forced Richard Cromwell abdicate as lord protector over it English Commonwealth, just over six months after he succeeded his father Oliver Cromwell at the postoffice. England, Scotland and Ireland will thus be left without a regent, but a year later the three kingdoms are re-established under the so-called the restaurant, then Charles II becomes their king. Due to his debts, Richard Cromwell soon flees abroad and lives on the continent for 20 years, before returning to England and then living there in obscurity until his death in 1712.
  • 1768 - The British captain James Cook departs from Plymouth with the ship HMS Endeavor on the first of three exploratory voyages to the Pacific. During the trip, which takes three years, you sail along the Australian coast and around the New Zealand islands, before continuing east across the Pacific Ocean. When the expedition returns to Britain in 1771, Cook becomes king George III appointed captain.
  • 1798 - The day after that a rebellion against British rule in Ireland has broken out allowing the British to execute a total of 74 people through the so-called Easter Rising in 1916, before the Irish rise again against the British.
  • 1935 - During the athletics competitions held in Ann Arbor in Michigan succeeds Jesse Owens set the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-yard dash and broke the records in the long jump (8.13 meters), the 220-yard dash (20.3 seconds) and the 220-yard hurdles (22.6 seconds) in the space of 45 minutes. This will be Owen's greatest sporting feat ever, as the long jump record will stand for 25 years and the hurdles record will be the first time anyone manages to run the distance in less than 23 seconds.
  • 1977 - The American film Star Wars, Directed by George Lucas, has its premiere in the USA (the Swedish premiere will be on December 16 of the same year). It gets two sequels (The Space Empire Strikes Back 1980 and Return of the Jedi 1983) and when Lucas in 1999 begins the project to make three more parts in the series (which take place before the old films) it has already achieved cult status.
  • 1992Jay Leno takes over the hosting of the classic American talk show The Tonight Show on the television channel NBC, then the former presenter Johnny Carson earlier in the year retired after 30 years in the post. David Letterman, who since 1982 has been the presenter of Late Night with David Letterman, has hoped to take over The Tonight Show, but when he now misses out on this, he chooses the following year to move to the competing television channel CBS, where he instead becomes the presenter of The Late Show with David Letterman, whereby Conan O'Brien takes over Late Night, which then changes its name to Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
