• 575 - Then John III has died the year before being elected Benedict I to the Pope.^[3]
• 1858 - The Italian astronomer and meteorologist Giovanni Battista Donati discovers one comet, which is named after him Donati's Comet. It is one of the most prominent comets of the 19th century and is at its brightest in September of that year (it passes only 75 million kilometers [0.5 AE] from Earth in October).
• 1899 - The lawless gang Wild Bunch, with among others The Sundance Kid, robs Union Pacific Railroads transcontinental express train nearby Wilcox, Wyoming. The change will be around 50,000 dollars.^[4]
• 1938 - The Riksdag decides to introduce a 12-day holiday (two weeks) with retained pay, for all gainfully employed people in Sweden, both in public and private service, and the law comes into force on June 8. The holiday period is gradually extended over the following decades to five weeks, but the law constitutes a minimum level – if employers and employees agree, the holiday may be longer. One group that is exempt, however, is domestic workers, who did not get a statutory right to vacation until the 1970s.
• 1946 - In Italy, the royal house of Savoy is prohibited from entering Italian soil and the ban remains until October 2002.
• 1953 - The British queen who took office in February the year before Elizabeth II crowned in Westminster Abbey in London. This will be the first British coronation to be televised (her father George VI's coronation in 1937 was filmed, but only to be shown on newsreels in cinemas), although some parts (eg the anointing act) at the Queen's own insistence are not shown. The reason why the coronation has been delayed for over a year after her accession to the throne is that according to tradition it is considered inappropriate to hold such a celebration, as the coronation entails, during the year of mourning after the death of the previous monarch.
• 1992 - In Denmark a referendum is held if the Treaty on European Union (also called Maastricht Treaty), which aims to expand the European Communities (EC) to European Union (EU). The Danish turnout will be 83.1 %, but with a narrow margin (50.7 %) the negative side wins. This leads to the treaty being partially renegotiated and results in The Edinburgh Decision. When the Danes hold a referendum on this on May 18, 1993, the Yes side wins with 56.8 %, which means that the treaty can then enter into force on November 1 of the same year.
• 2007 - Then the judge Herbert Fandel becomes attacked by a supporter, who runs onto the pitch below a European Championship qualifying match in football between Sweden and Denmark at the Parken stadium in Copenhagen, the match is abandoned and Sweden is awarded the victory, as confirmed by the European Football Federation Uefa on June 8. The supporter is later sentenced to 30 days in prison and 40 days of community service as well as 900,000 Danish kroner in damages.
