Today's name is: Svante, Boris. Congratulations on your name day!
This is week: 24
Day of the year is: 161 of total 365 days.
Historical events this day: (from Wikipedia)
- 323 BC – Alexander the Great dies in Babylon, ten days after falling ill as a result of prolonged partying. Through the so-called satraps, who support him in his dispute with Meleagros.
- 1194 - The French city Chartres suffers a major fire, where large parts of the city, including most of the newly built the cathedral, burns down. The cathedral was newly built in the years 1198–1220 and the current building (which in 1979 was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List) therefore dates from that time.
- 1423 - The Spanish canon Gil Sanchez Muñoz y Carbón is appointed antipope in Avignon and takes the name Clement VIII, then the former antipope Benedict XIII had died barely three weeks earlier. The election of Clement is made by three of the four cardinals Benedict has appointed, but the fourth, absent at the election, annuls it and instead proclaims himself antipope, leading to Clement's excommunication and imprisonment. At first Clemens is supported by the Aragonese king Alphonse V, but when he has achieved his political goals, he withdraws his support and forces Clemens to abdicate in 1429, after which he instead becomes bishop of Majorca until his death in 1446.
- 1878 - Founded Confederation of Prizren
- 1935 - Then the stock market analyst William Griffith Wilson and the doctor Robert Holbrook Smith, both of which have graves alcohol problem, have met and discovered that they can help each other abstain from alcohol, they founded in Akron in the Ohio Association Alcoholics anonymous (English: Alcoholics Anonymous) to also help other people with alcohol problems, but without having to sign that you are getting help (hence the anonymity). The organization grows with time and today (2022) is present all over the world.
- 1942 - After Bohemia-Moravia national protector Reinhard Heydrich has been the victim of an attack on May 27, which has led to his death on June 4, the Nazis carry out a retaliatory action, by completely annihilating the village Lidice outside of Prague. All the men in the village are arquebused, while the women are put in the concentration camp Ravensbrück or prison. Eight of the village's children are considered "racially pure" and placed in German families, while the others are murdered in gas wagons in the Chełmno extermination camp. After that, the whole village is burned and the remains are blown up (even the people who were previously buried in the cemetery are dug up and burned), but after the war the village is rebuilt. Two weeks later, a similar retaliatory action is carried out against the village Ležáky, which, however, is never rebuilt.
- 1944 - German SS troops massacre the population of the French town Oradour-sur-Glane, by locking the men in the village into five different barns, which the Germans fire with machine guns and then burn. The women and children are locked in the church and subjected to the same treatment. Of the total of 648 inhabitants, only five men and one woman survive and Oradour-sur-Glane then becomes a ghost town. The town was rebuilt after the war, but some distance from its original location. The old town is still abandoned today (2022) and is now a monument to German violence during the Second World War.
- 1967
- The Six Day War between Israel and its neighbors ends after, as the name suggests, only six days (it broke out on June 5). Israel has won a decisive victory and conquered Sinai Peninsula, The Gaza Strip, West Bank and The Golan Heights from their enemies. At the end of the 1970s, Israel begins to withdraw from Sinai (the last troops are gone from the area in 1982), but the rest of the areas are still today (2022) in Israeli hands. Although Egypt and Jordan have renounced their claims to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank respectively, there is still talk of a return to 1967 borders (the borders that prevailed before the war) in the negotiations for the establishment of a Palestinian state in the area.
- The Danish Crown Princess Margrethe (II) marry with Henri-Marie-Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat and they soon have the sons Frederick and Joachim. Through the marriage, Henrik (to which his name is translated) becomes Denmark's regent consort, when Margrethe becomes reigning queen in 1972.
- 1995 - The EU appoints the former Swedish prime minister and moderate leader Carl Bildt to mediate in the ongoing ones Yugoslav wars and he thus becomes one of the presidents of the peace conference for Bosnia and Herzegovina in November, which leads up to the so-called The Dayton Agreement.
- 2005 - The new Svinesund Bridge inaugurated[3] after a construction period of two years and thus replaces it old Svinesund bridge from the early 1940s. The inauguration was actually supposed to have taken place on June 7, as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Swedish-Norwegian the dissolution of the union (then the strait Svine Sound lies on the border between Sweden and Norway), but has been postponed until the 10th, so that the Swedish and Norwegian royal couples can attend.
